Established in 2018, WIRFAB was created by the Victorian Fisheries Authority after the need emerged for a supportive space to share knowledge, stories, and skills about fishing.
What began as a Facebook group soon evolved into a thriving community, connecting women from all walks of life and providing them with a common ground to explore the joys of recreational fishing.
As we set sail into the future, we’ve broadened our horizons to encompass the world of boating. By expanding our focus, we aim to create a more inclusive and empowering environment for women, embracing new challenges and celebrating the passion for both fishing and boating.

Mel Edmonds
San Remo, VIC
Mel’s love of fishing began at just 3 years old, catching her first fish – a toadfish – on the Bass River. Raised fishing with her grandpa and later working in her family’s tackle shop, her passion for the sport grew alongside her appreciation for sustainable practices and the joy of sharing the water with loved ones.
A Westernport Bay regular, Mel loves its variety of species and the thrill of the unknown. Fishing for her is about the challenge and excitement of the sport – not just the dinner plate – and she’s committed to catch-and-release practices.
As a WIRFAB leader, Mel hopes to inspire women to embrace fishing and create family traditions on the water. With her industry knowledge and passion, she’s here to help others get the most out of their fishing journey and spark a love for the sport in the next generation.
